The Background of 'A Common Word' |
Type de document : |
texte imprimé |
Auteurs : |
Gé M. Speelman, Auteur |
Année de publication : |
2010 |
Article en page(s) : |
pp. 109-120. |
Langues : |
Anglais (eng) |
Résumé : |
This article sketches the contents of the open letter of 138 Muslim Scholars to Christians. In addition it provides a reflection of the common ground the authors construct between the faith of Muslims and Christians. Maybe this common ground lies, more than either Christians and Muslims may be aware, in their joint roots in Judaism. The present article concludes with some reflections on the presupposition that it is fertile to start a dialogue on the basis of a (supposed) common ground. |

Type de document : |

Article en page(s) : |
pp. 121-146. |

Résumé : |
One of the most popular Christian holy days is Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Less well known, at least in the Western world, may be the Hindu festival of Ramnavmi, the celebration of the birth of Lord Rama. The central text of Christmas is Luke 2, which narrates the birth of Jesus while placing him in a certain context. The great text of Ramnavmi is the Ramcaritmanas, from which many verses are read during the ceremonies. The Ramcaritmanas is a Hindi version of the Sanskrit Ramayana epic and includes the birth story of Rama and his brothers.
This article presents English translations of the texts narrating the births of Jesus and Rama, analyses these texts and compares their contents and finally draw some conclusions regarding the concept of incarnation found in these texts.

Israelite Prophetic Marks among Zimbabwean Men of God : An Evaluation of the Conduct of Selected Zimbabwean Church Leaders in Recent Politics |
Type de document : |

Année de publication : |

Article en page(s) : |
pp. 159-178. |
Langues : |
Anglais (eng) |
Résumé : |
What does it mean to be prophetic during political turmoil? Does it mean opposition to the government or opposition to any opposition to the government? is article offers a Biblical theological response to this question as it evaluates the behaviour of the clergymen and church representative bodies in Zimbabwe. Although the immediate context is the violence that engulfed the nation soon after 29 March 2008 election, over the years since 2000, the church has spoken with contradictory voices. There are churches and individual church leaders who openly displayed their allegiance to the government irrespective of all glaring misgivings. On one hand there existed some Christian leaders who opposed whatever the government did, hence they openly clamoured for regime change. While all this was happening, the common man benefitted only confusion as to who really is prophetic, that is who really represents God and the people. |

Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity : African-Surinamese Perceptions and Experiences |

Résumé : |
Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity (P/C) is one of the fastest-growing religions worldwide. Some scholars connect P/C's success with broad processes of globalization. Others try to unravel more personal dynamics of conversion. This article seeks to understand both global forces and local cultural reasons to believe. It focuses first on the remarkable paradox that explains the movement's popularity among African-Surinamese (Caribbean) believers: what appears as P/C's rejection of their traditional religious system turns out to be a reinterpretation of beliefs and practices. From this line of argument I argue that P/C actually enables people, by ways of demonization, to express their spirituality and translate magico-religious conceptions into an acceptable framework. In conclusion, I put this Pentecostal paradox into larger perspective, stressing similarities with other religious movements and exposing an eclectic attitude towards religion that does not only meet personal belief experiences, but also challenges the hegemonic position of established Christian churches in Suriname.
