Résumé : |
Part One of this paper looked at local Church responses to the massacre in the Maumere district of central Flores, Indonesia, during the months of February to April 1966. Instigated by the Indonesian army, the slaughter of from 800 to 2,000 people was implemented by local Catholics against victims who were also Catholic. Responses of the local clergy, Archbishop and Dean are studied together with an account by one of the perpetrators, and the memoirs of three Dutch missioners written 40 years after the event. In Part Two these responses are examined in the light of two analyses of the Indonesian Church, one using an ‘integration’ frame, the other a Volkskirche model. When combined these studies allow us to begin to comprehend how the massacre could happen and why the clergy responded as they did. Honesty and transparency would allow us to move forward in mission with ‘bold humility’.

Ambon chosen trauma cosmic war religion-related violence |
Résumé : |
Between 1999 and 2002 religion-related riots took place on the Maluku islands in Indonesia. After the first clash, in January 1999, the conflict disseminated rapidly along religious lines. Religious language was used in order to understand what was going on, inscribing the conflict into specific religious traditions. However, using religious language to understand the conflict also framed the conflict into an essentialist religious battle with an important religious meaning. In this article I will explore the possibility to understand the religious framing of this conflict as a religious variety of what Vamik Volkan has coined ‘chosen trauma’. Applying this term to the situation in Ambon, elucidates the impact of religious language on violent conflicts.

Poverty Pentecostalism African Christianity Prosperity Gospel Southern Africa |
Résumé : |
This paper discusses the paradox presented by two realities: the situation of extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa and the rapid growth of charismatic Pentecostal Christianity with its emphasis on prosperity. Earlier studies on Pentecostalism have identified its success among the poor as a result of its promise of prosperity. Indeed others have viewed this doctrine as an impetus for delusion. This paper critically reviews the Pentecostal gospel of prosperity in the context of the poverty experienced in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, it discusses the possible contribution of this doctrine to sustainable development. Over and above a theorization of how this gospel can contribute to sustainable development for poverty reduction, the paper also discusses specific cases of how Pentecostal Christianity is contributing to poverty reduction in Zimbabwe and Botswana, for example.

Religion Church and Politics Mapositori Zimbabwe zanu-pf and mdc |
Résumé : |
This article confirms the validity of the well known observation by scholars regarding the intrinsic interconnectedness of religion and politics in Africa. This truism is affirmed by demonstrating how Zimbabwe’s main political parties, Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (zanu-pf) and Movement for Democratic Change (mdc), contrary to their public statements appeal to religious leaders and groups for political survival. Special focus is on ‘white garment churches’ otherwise commonly known as Mapositori the biggest brand of African Initiated Churches. As such, mainline churches and traditional chiefs are considered in passing especially in order to understand the present state of affairs where Mapositori rule the roost in political matters of Zimbabwe.
